-
Day 1: Arusha - Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Mandara Hut (2,700m)
Walking: 4–5 hours | Distance: ~8 km | Elevation Gain: +830m Begin your adventure with a drive from Arusha to Kilimanjaro at Marangu Gate after registration and briefing before entering the rainforest zone of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail ascends gradually through dense tropical forest filled with giant trees, hanging vines, moss-covered trunks, and rich biodiversity. Expect to encounter colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and exotic birdlife along the way. The path is well-defined but can be slippery depending on weather conditions. The air is humid and fresh, creating a magical jungle atmosphere as you ascend steadily. After approximately 4–5 hours of hiking, you reach Mandara Hut at 2,700m, located at the forest edge. Here you enjoy dinner, rest, and overnight stay while beginning natural acclimatization for higher altitude ahead. -
Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Walking: 6–8 hours | Distance: ~12 km | Elevation Gain: +1,020m After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind and enter heath and moorland zones characterized by giant heathers, volcanic rock formations, and wide mountain views. The trail becomes longer and more exposed as you gain altitude. You will enjoy panoramic views of Mawenzi Peak and surrounding valleys while walking at a controlled pace for proper acclimatization. Vegetation becomes sparse, and temperatures drop as you approach higher elevation. The landscape feels vast and open, offering some of the most scenic photography points on the Marangu Route. After 6–8 hours of trekking, you arrive at Horombo Hut at 3,720m. Dinner and overnight allow your body to adjust to reduced oxygen levels. -
Day 3: Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Kibo Hut (4,703m)
Walking: 5–7 hours | Distance: ~10 km | Elevation Gain: +983m Today's trek takes you into the alpine desert zone of Mount Kilimanjaro, where vegetation disappears and the landscape becomes rocky, dry, and lunar-like. The trail is steady but physically demanding due to increasing altitude and thinner air. Views of Kibo Peak dominate the horizon as you slowly approach base camp. The environment is silent and dramatic, with volcanic ash and stone formations surrounding the route. Proper hydration and pacing are essential today. After 5–7 hours of hiking, you arrive at Kibo Hut (4,703m), the final base before summit attempt. Rest early, hydrate well, and prepare mentally and physically for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak. -
Day 4: Summit Attempt – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Walking: 12–15 hours | Distance: ~21 km | Elevation: +1,192m / -2,175m Around midnight, begin the most challenging section of the climb under freezing temperatures and star-filled skies. The ascent climbs steep volcanic scree toward Gilman's Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m. Reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro at sunrise is a life-changing achievement, offering breathtaking glacier views and emotional reward. After photos and celebration, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for overnight recovery. This long day requires endurance, mental strength, and determination but delivers one of the world's greatest trekking achievements. -
Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Marangu Gate (1,870m) - Arusha
Walking: 5–6 hours | Distance: ~19 km | Elevation Loss: -1,850m After breakfast, begin your final descent through moorland and rainforest zones back to Marangu Gate. The air becomes richer in oxygen as you descend, and legs feel lighter after the summit achievement. You pass through familiar forest landscapes, marking the end of your journey. At the gate, you receive your summit certificate before transferring back to Arusha for rest and celebration of your accomplishment.
