-
Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,950m) – Simba Camp (2,600m)
Walking: 4–5 hrs | Distance: ~8 km | Elevation Gain: +650m Start at Rongai Gate after registration before entering the northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail begins through cultivated farmland and pine forest before gradually entering montane forest zones. The environment is quieter and drier compared to southern routes. Wildlife sightings such as colobus monkeys and birds are common. The ascent is gentle and steady, making it suitable for acclimatization. After 4–5 hours covering about 8 km, arrive at Simba Camp at 2,600m located on the edge of the moorland zone for dinner and overnight stay. -
Day 2: Simba Camp (2,600m) – Second Cave Camp (3,450m)
Walking: 6–7 hrs | Distance: ~9 km | Elevation Gain: +850m Continue trekking through heath and moorland landscapes with wide open views of Mawenzi Peak. Vegetation becomes sparse with volcanic rock formations dominating the scenery. The trail is gradual but longer, requiring steady pacing for altitude adaptation. The air becomes cooler and thinner as you ascend. After 6–7 hours covering approximately 9 km, arrive at Second Cave Camp at 3,450m. The camp offers panoramic views of the northern plains and Mount Kilimanjaro's rugged terrain. Dinner and overnight allow continued acclimatization. -
Day 3: Second Cave (3,450m) – Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)
Walking: 3–4 hrs | Distance: ~6 km | Elevation Gain: +150m A shorter acclimatization day through alpine moorland with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak. The landscape becomes more rugged and dry, with volcanic rocks and scattered vegetation. The trail ascends gently, allowing the body to adjust comfortably to altitude. Wildlife is rare but birdlife is still present. After 3–4 hours covering about 6 km, arrive at Kikelewa Camp at 3,600m nestled in a sheltered valley. Enjoy rest and recovery in preparation for higher elevation ahead on Mount Kilimanjaro. -
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp (3,600m) – Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)
Walking: 4–5 hrs | Distance: ~8 km | Elevation Gain: +730m Today's trek becomes steeper as you approach the alpine desert zone. The scenery transforms into dramatic volcanic terrain with views of Mawenzi Peak becoming more dominant. Vegetation disappears almost completely as altitude increases. The climb is steady and physically demanding due to thinner air. After 4–5 hours covering about 8 km, arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp at 4,330m located beneath towering cliffs. The campsite is one of the most scenic on the mountain, offering breathtaking alpine views. -
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m) – Kibo Hut (4,700m)
Walking: 5–6 hrs | Distance: ~9 km | Elevation Gain: +370m Cross the lunar-like alpine desert zone between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain is dry, rocky, and exposed with strong winds and cold temperatures. The trail is steady but slow due to altitude. Views of the summit cone become increasingly close and dramatic. After 5–6 hours covering about 9 km, arrive at Kibo Hut at 4,700m, the base camp for summit attempt. Rest early, hydrate well, and prepare for midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak. -
Day 6: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Camp (3,720m)
Walking: 12–15 hrs | Distance: ~21 km | Elevation: +1,195m / -2,175m Begin midnight summit push under freezing conditions. The trail climbs steep scree toward Gilman's Point and continues along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa on Mount Kilimanjaro. Sunrise at the summit is unforgettable. After celebration and photos, descend back to Kibo Hut for rest before continuing to Horombo Camp. This is the most demanding day of the trek, requiring endurance and mental strength. -
Day 7: Horombo Camp (3,720m) – Marangu Gate (1,870m) - Arusha
Walking: 5–6 hrs | Distance: ~19 km | Elevation Loss: -1,850m Final descent through moorland and rainforest zones back to trail exit. The air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen as you descend through familiar Kilimanjaro ecosystems. The forest is alive with birds and monkeys. After 5–6 hours covering about 19 km, arrive at the exit point and transfer to Arusha. End of service.
