Day 1: Momella Gate (1,500m) – Miriakamba Hut (2,514m)
Walking: 4–6 Hours | Distance: ~10 km | Elevation Gain: +1,014m After breakfast, transfer from Arusha to Arusha National Park and complete registration at Momella Gate. Accompanied by an armed ranger, begin your ascent through open grasslands and lush montane forest. Unlike many mountain treks, Mount Meru offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities right from the start, with chances to spot giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, bushbucks, and various monkey species. The trail gradually climbs through beautiful scenery while offering occasional views of Meru's volcanic slopes. A stop is made at the famous Maio Falls and several viewpoints overlooking the Ash Cone. As the afternoon progresses, continue through dense forest to reach Miriakamba Hut at 2,514 meters. Settle into the hut, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner, and listen to the sounds of the forest as you prepare for the higher elevations ahead. The comfortable mountain accommodation provides an excellent introduction to the trek while allowing your body to begin acclimatizing to the altitude. -
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2,514m) – Saddle Hut (3,570m)
Walking: 3–5 Hours | Distance: ~8 km | Elevation Gain: +1,056m Following breakfast, continue your ascent through the upper forest zone before entering the heath and moorland landscape characteristic of Mount Meru's higher elevations. The trail becomes steeper and more rugged as you gain altitude, with increasingly spectacular views opening behind you. Giant lobelias, heathers, and unique alpine vegetation dominate the landscape while the impressive cliffs of Meru Crater rise dramatically above the route. Throughout the climb, your guide maintains a steady pace designed to support acclimatization and maximize comfort. After several hours of trekking, arrive at Saddle Hut situated between Little Meru and the main summit ridge. Following lunch and a short rest, many climbers undertake an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru at approximately 3,820 meters. This rewarding excursion offers panoramic views across the surrounding plains and, on clear days, magnificent views toward Mount Kilimanjaro. Return to Saddle Hut for dinner and an early night before the summit attempt. -
Day 3: Saddle Hut (3,570m) – Socialist Peak (4,566m) – Miriakamba Hut (2,514m)
Walking: 10–12 Hours | Distance: ~14 km | Elevation: +996m / Descent: -2,052m Your summit day begins shortly after midnight. Equipped with headlamps, start the challenging climb toward Socialist Peak, following a narrow ridge that offers dramatic views of the crater and surrounding landscapes. The ascent requires determination and steady pacing as you navigate rocky sections while gaining elevation in the cool night air. As dawn approaches, the horizon gradually brightens, revealing breathtaking views across northern Tanzania. Reaching Socialist Peak at 4,566 meters provides an unforgettable reward. On clear mornings, Mount Kilimanjaro rises majestically above the clouds while the Meru Crater, Ash Cone, and vast plains stretch endlessly below. After celebrating your achievement and taking photographs, begin a careful descent back to Saddle Hut for a short rest and brunch. Continue descending through moorland and forest to Miriakamba Hut where a well-earned dinner and overnight stay await. This is the most demanding yet most rewarding day of the expedition. -
Day 4: Miriakamba Hut (2,514m) – Momella Gate (1,500m)
Walking: 2–4 Hours | Distance: ~10 km | Elevation Loss: -1,014m Enjoy a relaxed breakfast while reflecting on your summit achievement before beginning the final descent through the beautiful forests of Arusha National Park. The trail winds through lush vegetation rich with birdlife and wildlife, providing another opportunity to encounter giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys, and other animals that inhabit the lower slopes of Mount Meru. The descent is gentle and enjoyable, allowing you to fully appreciate the mountain's diverse ecosystems that range from alpine desert to tropical forest. Along the way, your guide shares insights into the park's ecology, volcanic history, and conservation efforts. Upon arrival at Momella Gate, receive your trekking certificate recognizing your successful ascent of Tanzania's second-highest mountain. Meet your transfer vehicle and return to Arusha where a hot shower, comfortable accommodation, and celebration of your accomplishment await. Your Mount Meru trekking adventure concludes with lasting memories of spectacular landscapes, wildlife encounters, and a successful summit of one of East Africa's most beautiful mountains.
